Troubleshoot Memory Problems While Updating WordPress

November 17th, 2009 Ashutosh Mishra

WordPress 2.8.6 was released a few days ago, and as always, I was among the first to hit the “Automatically update” button on my dashboard. However I ran into some trouble for the first time while auto-updating WordPress.

Fatal Error

Whenever I see the words ‘fatal’ and ‘error’ together, I automatically switch into panic mode. I just immediately logged out and ran to PC Tonic to see if it was running all well. Thankfully, it was. The manual updating process scares me to death, so I decided to give the auto-update another go the next day. Same error. I had had enough.

I ran to the WordPress forums and posted this issue. Fortunately, I got almost immediate help and was able to solve the problem. Here’s a screenshot of my discussion with stvwlf, my saviour.

Thing is, if you do face similar problems, you can try allocating more memory to your growing WordPress installation. Of course, the WordPress forum is always open to any and every query of yours. :)

What surprises me is that this blog is actually pretty small at the moment.
