Protect Your Identity Online

November 5th, 2007 Ashutosh

1.Never click on flashy advertisements on any website, like “Congrats! You are our 9999999th visitor” and all that. Don’t open spam messages, with subjects like “From the desk of Idi Amin” or “Collect your $500000 check from FreeLotto”. These messages are usually automatically marked as spam by most email providers (like Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail etc.). But if at all you find one of these in your Inbox, immediately mark it as spam and block the sender’s address.

2.Try to avoid sites that you haven’t heard before. Many p2p, torrent, warez, smiley, screensaver, wallpaper and porn sites have malicious codes that can put malware into your computer. A good way to stay clear of all such harmful sites is to use a safe web-surfing tool. You can find some of these free tools HERE. They integrate into popular web browsers, like add-ons, and warn you of dangerous sites with color codes or alerts.

3.Never give away your personal information, unless you have a very good reason to trust the receiver. Also try to avoid uploading family photos to your blog site or web site.

4.Always use an antispyware with real time protection, to ensure that your computer is free from keyloggers and other such malicious software. They can record your key strokes and collect very vital information like your credit card number, important passwords etc., and send them to the crooks who developed them. You can find a set of good and free antispyware HERE.
