Install security updates automatically in Ubuntu

December 25th, 2008 Ashutosh Mishra

By default, the Update Manager in Ubuntu only notifies you of available security and software updates and you’ve to start the downloads yourself. As these updates are released quite frequently (5-10 times every month), it can get quite irritating for you having to enter the password and then start the downloads every time. Automating updates is obviously a better option, and here’s how you can do it in Ubuntu :

1.Go to System > Administration > Software Sources from your desktop.

2.Enter your user account password to open the the Software Sources window. Now jump to the Updates tab.

3.Under the Automatic updates section, change the option to “Install security updates without confirmation” from the previous “Only notify about available updates”.

Do note that this will install only the important security and system updates, and not the occasionally released “recommended” updates (very much like the automatic update feature in Windows). So make sure that you fire up Update Manager once in a while to get these additional updates as well (System > Administration > Update Manager).
